Nothing is worse than cold wet laundry on a cold winter’s day. If your dryer no longer heats, it might be due to a problem with the heating element. For electric dryers, the heating element provides heat to the dryer. For gas dryers, there are two parts that might be causing your dryer to no longer heat: the gas valve coil and the ignitor.
Electric dryer heating element
The heating element on an electric dryer looks like a coil attached to a piece of metal. Your element might be a single coil, dual coil or triple coil. Over time, one coil, or all coils, can weaken and stop heating altogether. You can test this part for continuity using a multimeter. If you have more than one coil, you will need to test each terminal. If one of the terminals does not have continuity, then you will need to replace the element.
Sometimes you can visually inspect the element to see if there are any breaks in the coils. A broken coil means the part no longer works and you will need to replace it.
Gas Dryer – Gas Valve Coil
Gas Valve Coils come as a set or two or more coils. They work with the flame sensor to allow gas to flow into the burner assembly. The ignitor glows and ignites the gas in the burner assembly which provides heat to the dryer. If one or more of the solenoid coils in the gas valves fail, the gas valves won’t open and the burner will not ignite. If the ignitor glows, but no flame is produced, then the coils most likely failed and need to be replaced.
The ignitor heats up to ignite the gas released in the burner assembly. If the ignitor is not glowing when in operation, then the ignitor is most likely defective. This part can be test for continuity. If there is no continuity, then the ignitor should be replaced.
